"Raising and breeding AKC
dogs since 1977"
Welcome to our website, where you can get an
idea of what goes on at our farm and home, Briggadane Acres. We breed for Mantle
Great Danes. As a result, we are happy to place harlequins and the other colors
as pets and/or show prospects.
My beginning with purebred dogs began when I purchased a young Shetland Sheepdog
stud dog when I was 10 years old. He was my constant companion and shadow. He
was with me as I attended college, but passed on prior to my graduation. Shortly
before my marriage, I decided I was ready to get another dog. This time I went
with a GSD. Although my family had been breeding these dogs for years, I had
never gotten one for my own. I was content to watch and help as needed. Once
married, my husband and I decided to look for a laid back breed that was known
for being gentle, known to like all ages and types of people (strangers and
friends) and with a commanding stature and a desire to please people. The Great
Dane was a natural fit. After 18 years, I had found the perfect breed. Though
this is our dog of choice, it is not the right breed for everyone.
Their size is the only cause for alarm a stranger should have when meeting one.
Danes should be bred for a sound and solid temperament. A Dane should not cower
or crouch down when a stranger comes up to it. It should also NOT growl or
snap.
A Dane should act and look like a Dane. To us, this means that people who want
to breed them should be showing them first. When the registration clubs and
showing organizations began to grow, it was for the sole purpose of “bettering a
breed”. People wanted the results of their breedings seen. They wanted good
pedigrees tracked and recorded. Breeders can now have the registries track the
health testing that is done on their dogs. This is a benefit to both breeders
and pet owners. Now a pet buyer can ask to see a pedigree and can see the
results of hip testing as well as some other tests, RIGHT ON THE AKC PEDIGREE!
Please note: If you are thinking of buying a
Show prospect, if you did not have time to show it, you are NOT going to
suddenly find the time to breed it and raise a litter!
Pet buyers need to be aware of what they CAN get. Well-bred dogs, brothers and
sisters to show dogs, from champion parents, NOT just from “champion bred”
parents, like you find in many newspapers. And beware as well, of those
unethical breeders who charge top dollar for dogs they don’t guarantee and don’t
have health tests results YOU have access to. Briggadane realizes you may not be
able to read the results of an x-ray, but YOUR VET can. If a breeder does not
OFA, but claims to have x-rays on parents, ask for a copy to be sent to your vet
(there
